UNB, Dhaka :
Voicing frustration over Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s remarks that the next election will be held under the ruling party, BNP on Saturday renewed its call for talks over the framework of a polls-time neutral administration.
“Ruling party general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday (Friday) said that the next national election will be held under the Awami League government, led by Sheikh Hasina. We’ve got frustrated over his comment as it made us afraid that the regime is planning to arrange another January-5 style voter-less polls,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He further said, “We want to say Bangladesh is going through a genuine political crisis. Holding a free and fair election is the only solution to overcome it. Our party chairperson had said polls must be arranged under any neutral administration, no matter in which name it will be called. We renew the call and urge the government to restore people’s voting rights shunning its stubbornness.”
Ripon, one of the BNP’s international affairs secretaries, came up with the remarks while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Clearing his party’s stance on the election-time government, the BNP leader said their party wants the national polls to be overseen by a neutral administration as it was proved that the election could not be free and fair under the ruling party.
“We want to say discussions can be held with the political parties and civil society members about the framework, nature and responsibilities of the polls-time neutral administration. They (govt) can arrange roundtables over the issue. We also want to engage in talks with the government about the framework of the neutral government and how an impartial election can be held,” he said.
Ripon said, their party, if it returns to power, will not follow the politics of vengeance as they want to put an end to the politics of division.
The BNP spokesman urged the government no to obstruct the opposition parties from carrying out their political programmes as per their constitutional rights.
He alleged that the country’s people got fed up with the desperate attitude and repressive acts of the ruling party men.
Voicing concern for what he said over the slide in law and order, the BNP leader said children are not safe now even in their mothers’ womb as the ruling party men have become desperate.
