The BNP has failed to fulfil its target of collecting ten million new members of the party in last two months.
According to party leaders, the programme was disrupted because of the recent floods in different districts and the Rohingya crisis. They also accused police of creating obstacles for the grassroots level party leaders to implement the programme.
BNP Chairperson
Khaleda Zia announced the programme to collect 10 million new members within two months on June 30. The programme was scheduled to end by September 1.
But the party high-ups have extended the member collection campaign for two more months which will end by November 1.
When contacted, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, a Joint-Secretary General of the party told The New Nation, “The people are very keen to become members of the BNP. It is not difficult to collect 10 million new members for this widely popular party. But the recent flood has disrupted our campaign as most of our leaders and activists were busy in relief works among the flood affected people.”
He added: “And then the party men also became busy to collect and distribute relief and medical supports for the fiercely displaced Rohingya people now taken shelter in different camps in Cox’s Bazar.”
Alal also alleged that police and the ruling party men are creating obstacles to implement our plan of collecting the new members in different districts.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on October 2 sent a letter to the district level leaders informing them the extension of the programme till November 1.
He asked the party district level leaders to collect membership forms and distribute those among the targeted people throughout the extended period till November 1.
Meanwhile, some party insiders disagree with the senior leaders that natural disasters, Rohingya crisis and other obstacles by the government were the reasons behind the non-fulfillment of the party’s targeted one crore new membership collection.
They alleged that some influential leaders were not honest to implement the new membership collection campaign.
“Some of our senior leaders were found quite idle in the last two months. We have found them inactive in this programme,” said one mid level leader of the party wishing not to be named.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint-Secretary General of the party, has recently said in a programme in the city that the party is trying to get new members across the country. To fulfil the target of collecting more one crore members, he said, it has extended the tenure of the programme till November 1.
