UNB, Dhaka :
Brushing aside the government’s allegation that BNP is conspiring with Israeli intelligent agency Mossad against it, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said they want to ‘restore democracy and all rights’ through intensifying their movement together with people, not through any conspiracy.
“We don’t believe in any plot, and don’t join hands with conspirators. We’ll restore democracy and people’s rights together with them,” he said. Speaking at a protest programme, Fakhrul came up with the remarks a day after police arrested BNP joint secretary
general Aslam Chowdhury from the capital for his allegedly meeting with Israeli influential leader Mendi N Safadi in India recently to hatch a conspiracy to oust the government.
Dhaka City unit BNP arranged the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh protesting the submission of chargesheets against party chairperson Khaleda Zia in two arson attack cases filed with the capital’s Darussalam Police Station.
Fakhrul alleged that the government is implicating Khaleda Zia in cases one after another as it fears her huge popularity. “We believe cent percent that all the cases filed against our chairperson are false and conspiratorial. The regime wants to keep her away from politics. But, she (Khaleda) is not afraid of facing cases and going to jai.”
He said 72,000 cases were filed against over 5.70 lakh BNP leaders and activists across the country while 500 others were killed and 350 made disappeared under this government.
The BNP leader urged the government to withdraw all the cases filed against Khaleda and other BNP men immediately and take an initiative to resolve the political problems through discussions and an understanding.
Speaking at the programme, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed alleged that the government filed the ‘false and politically motivated’ cases against Khaleda only to harass her. “Politicians can be suppressed by filing cases against them, but it ultimately increases their popularity. Khaleda Zia will be elected Prime Minister in the coming days though the government filed over 70 cases against her,” he claimed.
Moudud said, the government has jeopardised politics by resorting to killings, enforced disappearances and false cases. Mentioning that the fall of the current government is a matter of time, he said BNP will bring about a change in the current situation through a fair and credible election.
