The BNP on Wednesday rejected the results of Gazipur City Corporation polls for widespread vote rigging. It has demanded fresh election.
“The ruling Awami League applied new tactics of vote rigging in the Gazipur city polls. The government snatched BNP’s victory with the direct help of the EC. So, we turn down Gazipur city election results outright and demand fresh election,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it at a press conference in its chairperson’s Gulshan office to give the party’s formal reaction over the GCC polls.
Mirza Fakhrul accused the government of using those tactics in Gazipur election, which were previously applied in Khulna city polls.
“The GCC polls once again manifested that no fair and credible election can be held under Awami League,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader said, Awami League has taken GCC polls results as positive for them. But it is clear to all that they used law enforcers, administration and the Election Commission, since the AL has been isolated from the people of the country.
“The ruling party men were using the state machinery and threatening journalists and other media workers to refrain from circulating the facts,” he further said.Fakhrul also urged people to take a strong stance against vote rigging done in Gazipur.
Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam was declared winners in the GCC mayor election on Wednesday as he defeated his rival BNP nominated Hasan Uddin Sarker by a huge margin of 2.22 lakh votes.
BNP Secretary General, however, said that they would participate in the upcoming Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city polls as part of their party’s ongoing movement to unmask the government and the EC, and expose their real traits to the people.
Replying to a question, Fakhrul said, they want the EC to be reconstituted as the current Commission has completely failed to perform its duty.
He demanded immediate release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
Party Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain alleged that their mayor candidate’s many agents were obstructed from going to polling stations.
Party Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said that their party should work to foil the government’s plot to destroy democracy.
