A mob severed the tendons of both the legs of a BNP rebel contesting for the post of vice-chairman in the upcoming election in Morelganj upazila as he allegedly issued threats to them brandishing firearms at Polerhat Bazar in the upazila on Friday.
The vice-chairman aspirant, Abdul Mannan alias Monakha, 50, son of late Ohed Ali of Katabunia village in the upazila, was undergoing treatment at
Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) under police escort. Officer-in-charge M Rakib Khan of Morelganj Police Station said while campaigning for Monakha, his supporters locked in an altercation with the locals at Polerhat Bazar.
As a sequel to that, Monakha went to the spot around 12 pm and gave threats to the locals brandishing firearms.
Outraged by the incident, locals caught him after a chase and gave him a good beating.
At one stage, they also cut off the tendons of the two legs of the vice-chairman candidate, leaving him injured.
Being informed, police rescued him and first took him to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital from where he was shifted to the KMCH for better treatment.
Later, the law enforcers recovered a foreign pistol and four bullets from a nearby pond based on information gleaned from Monakha.
In another development, a case was filed against Monakha under the Arms Act.
Morelganj upazila goes to election on March 15.
Away in Faridpur, at least 10 people were injured in an attack by their rivals in a post-election violence at Yusufdia village in Saltha upazila on Friday.
The injured were admitted to Faridpur Sadar and Nagarkanda Health Complex.
Local sources said the supporters of BNP-backed chairman and vice-chairman candidates, who emerged victorious in the polls to the Saltha upazila, came under attacks at noon.
Later, police, and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
