UP elections: BNP candidates being obstructed, says Rizvi

Staff Reporter :The probable candidates of the BNP in the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) polls face obstruction in several parts of country. Not only that, they have been asked to keep away from the polls race of to face consequence, alleged the BNP.  BNP Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Thursday alleged that their probable candidates have being harassed in many places.The BNP leader spoke in the press briefing after placing to the Election Commission (EC) the name and signature of the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as he has been entrusted with power to give authentication to BNP’s chairman candidates.Rizvi Ahmed said, the ruling party is trying to make their probable candidates to flee their homes so that they can’t contest the polls. “Our potential candidates are not only being intimidated, but also harassed and threatened of implicating false cases,” he added.He alleged that the EC is working as the puppet body of the government. “The EC has lost its credibility. It couldn’t perform duty as an independent body, and exert its power. It always works as a government’s puppet.”The BNP leader reiterated his party’s position about the local body polls under party banner, saying it will only disrupt social bondage and harmony in the grassroots level.Meanwhile, the ruling party men snatched the nomination papers of a BNP’s chairman candidate at Torabganj union of Komalnagor in Laxmipur. BNP leader Musleh Uddin alleged that the ruling party men snatched the papers when he was coming out from Upazila returning officer after buying the nomination papers. He informed the matter to the returning officer.
