BNP candidate, supporters ‘attacked’ in Chandpur

A BNP contestant and his supporters were reportedly attacked in Chandpur while the motorcades of BNP candidate for Manikganj-1 and Jatiya Party contestant for Manikganj-2, and the vehicle of Patuakhali-3 BNP runner’s wife allegedly came under attack on Saturday. In Chandpur, BNP contestant for Chandpur-2 Dr Jalal Uddin and his supporters came under attack twice at Ludhua in Matlab North upazila during electioneering, leaving 10 people
injured. Witnesses said a group of AL men swooped on the BNP candidate and his followers while going to offer fateha at the graves of his parents around 1pm. The attackers also vandalised Jalal’s vehicle.
Police fired several shots in the air to bring the situation under control. As the BNP contestant came out of his residence again around 3pm along with his supporters, they came under attack again. In Manikganj, leaders and activists of Jubo League reportedly attacked the motorcade of former MP and Jatiya Party runner from Manikganj-2 parliamentary seat SM Abdul Mannan in Kanthapara area of Harirampur upazila in the afternoon, leaving nine people injured. Mannan claimed that the Jubo League men swooped on his motorcade equipped with sticks around 2:30pm as they reached Kanthapara for electioneering. They vandalised his vehicle and several motorcycles, he said. Awami League leaders and activists allegedly attacked the convoy of BNP candidate for Manikganj-1 SA Jinnah in Doulatpur upazila headquarters in the evening. Jinnah alleged that a group of 15-20 ruling party men, led by upazila AL general secretary Abdul Quddus, swooped on them while they were conducting campaign. The attackers vandalised six vehicles at that time, leaving five BNP men injured. In Patuakhali, the vehicle carrying the family members of BNP candidate in Patuakhali-3 Golam Maula Rony, including his wife Runu Begum and sister, was attacked in Madina Masjid area of Golachipa upazila at noon. Former Golachipa municipality chairman Abu Taleb Miah, who also inside the vehicle, was injured in the attack. Runu alleged that Awami League activists attacked and vandalised the vehicle. However, Golachipa upazilaAwami League general secretary Golam Mostafa Titu denied the allegation, saying BNP’s internal feud was behind the attack. Akhter Morshed, officer-in-charge of Golachipa Police Station, said they received a complaint in this regard and will take necessary steps.
