BNP nominated candidate from Barishal-1 Constituency Zahir Uddin Swapan on Monday wrote to the Election Commission seeking his security as per the Representation of People Order (RPO).
In a letter, Swapan has alleged that Gournadi upazila unit Awami League general secretary and Municipality
Mayor Harisur Rahman had been “openly threatening to physically assault him indicating his name in different rallies and meetings”.
The video and news of such threats have also gone viral on social media platforms, he stated adding, “In this situation, I an afraid about the security of my family and party men.”
Swapan submitted the letter to the Chief Election Commissioner yesterday.
After receiving the letter, the CEC said that as a constitutional institution the commission is entitled to ensure the security of the voters and the candidates.
He also assured Swapan of providing every support necessary through the returning officer of his constituency to conduct his election campaign.
