Anisul Huq said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina out of humanity has done as much as she could do for the BNP chairperson to facilitate a convict following the law.
Khaleda, a 76-year-old former prime minister, was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on 13 November, six days after she had returned home from the hospital.
The BNP chief’s physicians said she has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, ophthalmological and dental complications.
They also said she is now suffering from critical cardiac, kidney problems while her blood sugar is out of control and hemoglobin level in her blood has dropped.
Meanwhile. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said the government has provided all facilities to convicted prisoner BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia as per the law.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has set an example by providing all possible facilities to the BNP chairperson as per the law. It should not be forgotten that Khaleda Zia has been convicted by the court,” he said while speaking virtually from Dhaka at an extended meeting of local Awami League leaders and activists of Akhaura of Brahmanbaria held Akhaura municipality on the occasion of union parishad elections.
If BNP wants to bring doctors from abroad for Khaleda Zia’s treatment, they can do that, he said, adding that the government has no reservation about it. But BNP must keep it in mind that the government would not do anything beyond the law, he added.
About the Akhaura union parishad elections, the law minister said elections must be held in a free and fair manner. If anyone tries to create any chaos during the elections, stern action will be taken against them, he added.
Upazila Awami League convener Principal (retd) Md Joynal Abedin presided over the meeting, which was attended, among others, by Akhaura municipality mayor Takjil Kholija Kazal, AL leaders Md Monir Hossain Babul, Selim Bhuiyan, Abdullah Bhuiyan Badal, Ataur Rahman Nazim and Abdul Momin Bablu.
On behalf of the family, Khaleda’s younger brother, Shamim Iskander, submitted an application to the Home Ministry on 11 November urging the government to allow her to go abroad for better treatment.
BNP observed a seven-hour mass hunger strike programme in the capital on Saturday demanding that its ‘critically ill’ chairperson Khaleda Zia be allowed to go abroad for advanced treatment.
As part of a countrywide programme, hundreds of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies began the hunger strike in front of their Nayapaltan central office at 9am.
Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said “Khaleda Zia is fighting a battle between life and death. She’s the most beloved leader of the people of Bangladesh. It’s inhumane that she won’t be given a scope to receive treatment abroad.”
Meanwhile, at a discussion programme on Friday, Fakhrul accused the government of plotting to end the life of Khaleda Zia by not allowing her to receive advanced treatment abroad.
