Local BNP called a daylong hartal in the city for Thursday protesting the confinement of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and the arrest of its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Badruzzaman Selim, member secretary of Sylhet city unit of BNP, announced the hartal from a procession in Darga Gate area of the city at about 10:30 am on Wednesday.
The BNP chairperson was kept confined to her office since Saturday night as she threatened to hold mass rallies in Dhaka to mark ‘Democracy Killing Day’ on January 5, the first anniversary of the last parliamentary polls that BNP and its allies boycotted.
On Tuesday afternoon, detectives picked up BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir after his overnight stay inside the Jatiya Press Club due to ‘security concern’.
Detectives tried their best to bring Fakhrul out of his car but failed amid scuffles and finally they drove him away with his car.
