Staff Reporter :The BNP has called a countrywide daylong hartal for tomorrow (Wednesday) protesting the Monday’s attack on BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s motorcade “in attempt to kill her”. It will also stage demonstrations across the country today (Tuesday). However, Dhaka and Chittagong cities will remain out of the hartal purview and the demonstration programme due to April 28 city polls.BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the programmes at an emergency press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday evening, after the attack of Khaleda Zia’s motorcade at city’s Karwanbazar area.Barrister Moudud said that the attack was made on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during her election campaign in a deliberate attempt to kill her. He blamed the government for the attack. He said that the ruling party men attacked the motorcade after realising that the Awami League-backed candidates will face defeat in the city polls. “We think the provocative remarks made by the prime minister and some ministers in recent times to stop Khaleda Zia from campaigning have encouraged their armed terrorists to launch the attack on her motorcade,” he said.He also referred to the statement Inspector General of the Police (IGP) who at a meeting with the Election Commission openly said that Khaleda Zia must be stopped from campaigning. “The statement of the IGP is violation of code of conduct of the public servants,” he said. The BNP leader pointed out that the election atmosphere has been vitiated due to terrorist activities. “Please stop this kind of activities. Otherwise, we will have to rethink our position,” he added.
