BNP on Friday voiced anger at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for not ‘denouncing’ Myanmar in her address to the United Nations General Assembly for carrying out genocide against Rohingyas in Rakhine State.
“The Prime Minister this early morning addressed the United Nations and talked about the Rohingya problem. But, she neither accused Myanmar of carrying out genocide against Rohingyas nor condemned the country,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a discussion, he also said the Prime Minster could not present the main problem before the world leaders as she did not talked
about the mass killing. Jatiyatabadi Textile Engineers Association arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), marking BNP chairperson’s Khaleda Zia’s 10th jail release day.
Fakhrul said Sheikh Hasina should have accused Myanmar of mass killing or genocide and asked the international community to slap economic sanctions on the country to force it to stop the mass killing and take back Rohingyas refugees.
He also said the Prime Minister should take steps to unite the entire nation to mount pressure on Myanmar to take back its citizens who have taken shelter here as refugees.
The BNP leader opposed the proposal of creating a safe zone for Rohingyas, saying it will create another Palestine-like problem. “Rohingyas are citizens of Myanmar. And the country must take back its nationals ensuring their civic rights and dignity,” he added.
He also asked the government to engage army to face the Rohingya crisis and properly distribute relief among them.
Fakhrul alleged that the government being alienated from people has established dictatorship in the country.
He again called upon the government to hold dialogues with political parties to overcome the political crisis and hold the next election in a free and fare manner.
Criticising the government for continuing its ‘repression’ on BNP leaders and activists and filing ‘false’ cases against them, Fakhrul urged his party colleagues to get united to put up a strong resistance against the government.
