UNB, Dhaka :
Though he is unwilling to vie for the mayoral post in the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls, BNP has directed its leader Taimur Alam Khandaker to get ready for contesting it.
Party insiders said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia gave the directive as Taimur met her at her Gulshan office on Friday night.
Contacted, Taimur, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, said Khaleda during the last night’s meeting asked
him to contest the polls as the BNP candidate. “I’ve told madam (Khaleda) that I’m obedient to party, but I’m not willing to take part in the polls under the current political context.”
He said he also assured the BNP chairperson that he will work for whoever gets party’s nomination to ensure its victory.
Asked whether he will turn down if BNP finally nominates him, Taimur said he is not sure what he will do if it happens.
However, a Narayanganj unit BNP leader close to Taimur said he will vie the election if BNP insists him to do so.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the NCC polls will be held on December 22.
Ruling Awami League has nominated incumbent mayor Selina Hayat Ivy to contest the polls with the party’s electoral symbol ‘boat’.
BNP standing committee members at a meeting on Thursday night decided to join the polls.
Taimur was the BNP-backed mayoral candidates in the 2011 NCC polls, but he had to quit the race the day before voting following party directives.
