The BNP plans tougher agitation programme if party Chairperson Khaleda Zia is sent to jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case filed against her on February 8.
Party leaders and activists also vowed to make her free within days if she is imprisoned.
According to the court, the verdict of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against the BNP chief will be given in February 8.
Meanwhile, Zia Charitable Fund graft case and other cases against Khaleda Zia are also in final stages.
BNP senior leaders are also anxious over the possible verdict of party chief’s cases.
BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said, “Some ministers, PM’s special envoy (JP chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad) and leaders from ruling Awami League
and its ally are saying in last few days that Khaleda Zia will be imprisoned soon. Such speeches proved that the government has written the verdict earlier.”
He said this at a news briefing at the party’s central office in the city yesterday. “Opposition leaders and activists, implicated in false cases, are being arrested massively across the country for the last few weeks,” he said.
According to party sources, a total of 528 cases were filed against 24,707 BNP leaders and activists across the country while 1,519 were arrested in last one month since December 20, 2017 to January 22 this year.
This ‘unelected’ government is hatching heinous conspiracies to keep the opposition parties away from election field before the polls to win the election again without competition, the BNP secretary general said.
In these circumstances, the BNP leaders think only tougher agitation programme can make a way out to get rid of such situation.
“If our chairperson is arrested due to the false cases filed against her, the people would not sit idle. The people would start strong movement against the undemocratic government,” former Army Chief, Lt. General (rtd) Mahbubur Rahman told The New Nation on Thursday.
He said the party men would not tolerate autocratic steps anymore of the government against the party leaders and activists.
Meanwhile, senior leaders of the party said its leaders and activists are now closely monitoring the government steps on the BNP.
When contacted, BNP Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal told The New Nation, “The party men are ready to foil any conspiracy against our chairperson Khaleda Zia. The party has sufficient preparations to start strong agitation against the autocratic rules of the government.”
Alal said the BNP is already in the movement against every anti-nation step of the government.
“We are working not only for our party matter but for the national interest. We will be there where the government will be taking decisions to harm the interests of the people and the nation,” he said.
Besides, the party is trying to revive morale of its grassroots level leaders, activists and supporters, he said.
He added that the party is now busy to take appropriate plans to overcome the situation, which may occur after the probable imprisonment of Khaleda Zia.
“In such a situation, the party may run under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the Senior Vice-Chairman of the party living in UK. The party Standing Committee Members and its Secretary General will lead the party under direct directions of Tarique Rahman,” said one of the senior leaders preferring anonymity.
