Slain blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider’s younger brother Golam Mortuja Haider yesterday (Sunday) testified in the murder case while Judge Syeed Ahmed of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 recorded the depositions.
Later, the court fixed July 14 to record the depositions of other witnesses. Out of 55 witnesses of the case the court so far recorded the depositions of three.
Earlier, the same court framed charges afresh against eight accused of the case, responding to a plea of the Special Public Prosecutor Md Mahbubur Rahman of the tribunal on May 21.
Of the accused, Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani has been indicted Under Section 302 and 107 of the Penal Code, while others were indicted Under Sections 302 and 34. On March 18, Judge Ruhul Amin of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed an indictment order against Mufti Jasim, chief of militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team, and seven students of North South University. They were later expelled from the university.
Rajeeb, known as Thaba Baba in the bloggers’ community, was hacked to death on February 15, 2013 near his residence at Pallabi area in the capital. The murder happened ten days after the movement begun at Shahbagh demanding death penalty for the war criminals of 1971 and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir. The following day, the victim’s father Nazim Uddin lodged the murder case with Pallabi Police Station of the city.
