The Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday (Monday) transferred blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider Shovon murder case to Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 for quick disposal.
Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification to transfer the case documents of the murder case, while the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court transferred the case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Meanwhile, Md Mahbubur Rahman, Special Public Prosecutor of
the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 received the gazette. Later, the court would set a date to record the depositions of the witnesses.
On the other hand three witnesses-Rajib’s father Dr Nazim Uddin, his cousin Kazi Galib and his younger brother Newaz Mortuza Haider appeared to the Sessions Judge’s Court to testify. However, their depositions were not recorded as the case was transferred.
Meanwhile, accused Redwanul Azad Rana, 30, was on the run as earlier on Monday. However, other seven accused of the case- Faisal Bin Nayeem alias Dipu, 22, Maksudul Hasan Anik, 26, Ehsanur Reza Rumman, 23, Md Nayeem Sikder alias Irad, 19, Nafis Imtiaz, 22, Sadman Yasir Mahmud, 20 and Chief of Islamist outfit Ansar Ullah Bangla Team- Mufti Jasim Udddin Rahmania were produced to the court from the jail on Monday. They had confessed to a court about their involvement in the killing. Of the accused five are North South University students, who reportedly confessed that they had killed Rajib upon the directives of the chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team, a Bangladeshi follower of Al-Qaeda. However, none of the witnessed the killing directly, the investigator said in his report.
Rajib, known as Thaba Baba in the blogging community, was hacked to death on February 15 last year near his Pallabi home, only 10 days after the Gonojagoron Moncha movement demanding the death penalty for 1971 war criminals and ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its students’ body Islami Chhatra Shibir begun at Shahbagh of the capital. A day after the murder, the victim’s father Nazim Uddin filed the murder case with Pallabi Police Station of the city. Police Inspector Nibaron Chandra Borman of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court against the accused on January 28, last year.
The trial of the case begun on April 18, when a Dhaka court framed charges against the eight accused. Later, the lawyers of accused Maksudul Hassan Anik appealed to the High Court against the decision of indictment passed by the lower court. The apex court is yet to dispose of the petition, that sought rejection of the indictment.
