Police conducted a three-hour drive in city’s Sayedabad area on Sunday night and arrested a suspect over the murder of blogger Nazimuddin Samad.
Nizamuddin was killed by some unidentified miscreants in city’s Suttarapur area in April this year.
The arrested man has been identified as Rashidun Nabi, police said.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Maruf Hossain on Monday placed Rashidun Nabi on a three-day remand when
Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Inspector Tazul Islam produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
A joint team of CTTC unit and Detective Branch of Police have detained Rashidun Nabi from Sayedabad Bus Stand area in the capital around 11:35pm in connection with the murder of blogger Nazimuddin,” said the CTTC chief Monirul Islam.
“Five, including Rashidun Nabi, took part in the killing of Nazimuddin Samad,” said Monirul.
“They all carried sharp weapons and one carried firearms. They hacked Nazimuddin with the sharp weapons and later shot him when people started to gather around,” he said.
“Rashidun Nabi was active member of the banned Ansarullah Bangla Team and joined the outfit last year. He was the leader of the operation team, the police official said.
Monirul Islam briefing journalists at the DMP media centre said that militant Rashidun Nabi also had links with the murder attempt of publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul and the killing of Xulhaz Mannan.
Nazimuddin’s Facebook timeline shows he openly criticised religious bigotry in his status updates.
A Facebook conversation between Nazim and one Azharul Islam on March 31 last year shows that the latter wrote to Nazim, “I am concerned about your safety. Be a little cautious. You know what is happening around…”
In response, Nazim wrote, “I am also scared… scared of untimely death. But what can I do, sir? Perhaps it is better to die than to live with head down.” He posted a smiley symbol at the end of his message.
Nazimuddin, a law student of Jagannath University, was hacked and shot to death in Hrishikesh Das Lane of Dhaka on April 6 this year for what his friends and family believe was for criticizing fundamentalism.
