Benapole land port, the largest land port in the country, is now facing severe crisis as a huge quantity of import and export goods have been stockpiled there due to ongoing hartal and blockade programmes enforced by the BNP alliances.
The scenario is almost same at the other land ports also. The export-import business through the other land ports are almost shut down as businessmen do not show interest to ferry goods fearing arson attack on the goods-laden trucks in the highways.
Abul Hossain, a clearing and forwarding agent at Benapole Land Port, said that the transportation crisis hits carrying goods between India and Bangladesh.
Officials said that the businessmen were compelled to leave goods in the land port area without taking and giving delivery. As a result, the stock of goods in the Benapole port is increasing every day. Goods in an amount about twice the capacity are now amassed in the port area and are causing hamper to normal activities of port.
Although police, BGB and other forces are helping in the delivery process of imported goods and some emergency goods are being ferried inside the country, still many businessmen do not want to take risk to continue the transportation of goods.
Sources said, the truck fair for ferrying goods has risen to 40 to 45 thousand taka from the previous 20 to 25 thousand taka due to the terrible crisis of transports.
In this backdrop, the businessmen have decided to leave their goods in Benapole Port as they cannot meet this extra expense.
Several businessmen said that many goods coming from New Delhi and Mumbai zone are being stocked in Petrapole zone of India by renting store areas. When the political situation in the country becomes stable again, then these goods will be brought in the country.
According to them, export volume of goods from Bangladesh through land ports have been reduced as the goods carrying trucks cannot come to the Benapole border.
At least 70 people have lost lives since January 5 due to petrol bomb attacks in different parts of the country. Most bomb
attacks are in highways out side the capital, Dhaka.
Agartola land port in between Dhaka and Tripura districts is shut down and no buses are plying in this route.
Bus drivers have also expressed their fear of driving during the present political unrest in the country.
