The police have launched a ‘block raid’ in capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area from 9:00pm to midnight on Wednesday to arrest drug peddlers and criminals.
Several hundreds of police and Detectives Branch (DB) of police took part in the operation, Qamruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhatara Police Station said, adding they were searching in different houses and messes in the areas.
Getting information about a group of miscreants who were gathering there, the police carried a block raid in the Bashundhara Residential area.
The block raid was against drug peddlers in the area and its adjacent areas. There is no arrest in the raid or no case was filed yet, the police official said.
However, residents of Bashundhara Residential Area are living in panic as law enforcers have increased their petrol in the area after the clash between student protesters and police on last Monday.
The clash took place between police and students of North South University (NSU), East West University (EWU) and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) in Bashundhara Residential Area on Monday as the students gathered there to protest the Jhigatola attacks on demonstrators by the alleged ruling party men on Saturday and Sunday.
Some 40 injured people, mostly students, were rushed to Apollo Hospital, according to a doctor at its emergency department. Some passersby, policemen and street children were also hurt during the clash.
Police arrested 22 students in the area for their alleged involvement of attacking police. On Tuesday, police place them at court for remand. The court granted two days remand of 22 students of the private universities in two separate cases.
The court on Thursday denied bail to 22 students of private universities, who were arrested in two separate cases filed over vandalism and attacks on police, upon completion of their two-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sattyabrata Shikder denied the appeal from the defence lawyers seeking bail and sent the students to jail instead.
