Black cumin cultivation increases in Jamalpur

Black cumin cultivation is gaining popularity in the district as farmers are being motivated to cultivate the black seeds.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) black cumin (Kalijira) was cultivated on 31 hectares of land this year compared to 2 hectares in the last year.
This year the black seeds were cultivated on 25 hectares in Islampur upazila, 2 hectares each in Jamalpur Sadar, Dewanganj and Bakshiganj upazilas.
Deputy director of DAE M Rafiqul Islam said farmers are being encouraged to cultivate black cumin because of its economic prospect.
Besides, honey collected from black cumin flowers has medicinal value.
