BKMEA, ILO sign MoU to ensure workers’ safety

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association and International Labour Organization have agreed to work together to ensure occupational health and safety of workers in knitwear factories.
The knitwear makers and the labour organisation signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard at the BKMEA office in Dhaka on Sunday, a press release said.
BKMEA Senior Vice-President Mansoor Ahmed and Vice-President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan while ILO Country Director for Bangladesh Tuomo Poutiainen and its Workplace Safety Specialist Maurice Len Brooks inked the MoU on behalf of their organisations.
According to the MoU, the project will work to ensure the occupational health and safety of workers in the 50 member factories of BKMEA, as part of the National Initiative, read the release.
At the event, Mansoor Ahmed said, “The project will play a vital role in enhancing the productivity of the knitwear factories and safety of the workers along with ensuring their occupational health. I believe it will be conducive to national development and production.”
Dubbing the project as a milestone, Tuomo Poutiainen said, “The project has made the issue of occupational health and safety important in Bangladesh. As production has a direct link with workers, the issue should be taken with importance.”
