TNN, Guwahati :
BJP on Saturday said that the process of counting votes for the Lok Sabha polls in Assam should be closely monitored by CCTV cameras to prevent any malpractice or error.
The party’s MP from Mangaldoi Ramen Deka said BJP would talk to Assam’s chief electoral officer on Monday about its apprehensions that unscrupulous elements might interfere in the counting process.
“Given the prevailing political and law and order situation in the state, and the many instances of rigging during the recently-concluded polls, we fear unscrupulous elements might disturb the counting process. We want it to be smooth. Polling officials need to play a proactive and neutral role,” Deka said.
Deka, seeking re-election from Mangaldoi, claimed the state was passing through a turbulent political phase under the Congress government.
“The violence in Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) has exposed the government’s lack of preparation in preempting the killings even though the area has experienced clashes in the past. Murders, rapes and other criminal activities are also on the rise. Elections were rigged in many places. Such activities are harmful for a democracy,” Deka said.
