A general secretary of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that Indian government will go ahead with its plan of implementing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), even if the West Bengal’s state government opposes it, reports Outlook citing PTI.
Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is also in-charge of West Bengal BJP, has said that the CAA rules will be framed in the next one month, after which the act will be ready for implementation in the [West Bengal] state.
“We are firm in our promise to refugees. There was some delay in framing of the rules, but the process is going on now. They will be ready in a month, after which we will be able to start its implementation. January-end is our target,” Vijayvargiya told The Economic Times.
Also, at another public meeting in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district the BJP general secretary told the reporters, “Even if the West Bengal government opposes the implementation of CAA we (central government) will go ahead in implementing it. If the state supports the implementation it will be fine.”
Vijayvargiya, however, did not say anything on the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC).
BJP President J P Nadda during his recent visit to West Bengal had said that rules for implementation of the Act are being framed. CAA will be implemented in letter and spirit after it.
To a categorical question about the implementation of NRC, Vijayvargiya replied curtly “We are talking about implementation of CAA here.”
Shantanu Thakur, BJP MP from Bongaon, later told the reporters “We will be looking forward to Home Minister Amit Shah making the announcement on implementation of CAA during his visit to Thakurnagar.”
The CAA grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India before December 31, 2014, to escape religious persecution.
