Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and Barisal City Corporation now on logger head over eviction drives of illegal occupants on Kirtankhola River bank on Port Road and Hatkhola areas of the city.
Local people alleged that both authorities using factional rivalry of ruling AL to get backing of their demands ignoring the public interest and the illegal grabbers even using photos of the Prime Minister and Bangabondhu for establishing their rights.
A drive for evicting illegal structures from the land claimed to be owned by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authourity adjacent to Barisal river port, was forced to stop within an hour due to interference of Barisal City Corporation authourity on June 22 noon.
Then another eviction drive of BCC was stopped by interference of BIWTA on October 27 and a human chain programme against the leasing the land by BIWTA was held on October 29.
Nurul Islam Molla, organising secretary of Sadar upazila Sramik League, claimed they taking lease from BIWTA on recommendation from former BCC Mayor and city AL president late Shawkat Hossain Hiron paying monthly rent as 6,100 for 60-square feet stall to BIWTA regularly and so eviction drive of BCC was not legal.
On other hand Harunor Rashid, Kalam Sharif, president of Mahanagor Bastuhara League, claimed that during the mayor-ship of late Shawkat Hossain Hiron BCC started operating Charkawa Kheya Ghat without any toll in public interest and BCC leased some spaces surrounding the area to cover the expenses. So BIWTA has no right to evict them.
Md. Shahidullah, deputy director BIWTA and Barisal port officer, said about 300 illegal structure established on the land owned by BIWTA from 150 feet of the river bed to three and half kilometers area around the port.
According to a list BIWTA started eviction drives to construct passenger shade, different establishments for modernisation and increase of beautification of the port. A rest house, prayer room, toilet and bathroom for the passenger would be built near at the cost of Tk 2.5 core on the land illegally occupied by some people claiming lease from BCC.
The eviction drive was forced to be postponed as BCC authourity raised objection claming ownership of land, told the BIWTA official denying any giving any lease to any body.

22,000 liters of liquor destroyed in Rajshahi

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 unearthed seven liquor factories and seized huge quantity of liquor in Bharua village under Puthiya Upazila
of the district today.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in the village and seized more than 22,000 liters of liquor after searching the factories one after another till 11.30 am. The team also nabbed a drug-addict, Mominul Islam, from one of the factories. But, none of the factory-owners could be arrested.
Afterwards, Executive Magistrate Shamirul Islam of a mobile court sentenced Mominul Islam to three months jail and passed an order for destruction of all the seized liquor publicly.
