BIWTA asked to strengthen drive against river encroachment

Shipping Secretary Md Abdus Samad asked the BIWTA to further strengthen its eviction drives against encroachment of all rivers across the country.
“The shipping secretary gave directives to BIWTA, in a concerted way along with other agencies concerned including district administrations, RAJUK, WDB, Directorate of Environment and Dhaka WASA, to further strengthen their ongoing eviction drives against illegally occupied riverbanks to make the rivers free from occupation and pollution,” said a press release here. Samad came up with the directives on Monday while visiting the banks of rivers Buriganga and Turag from Dhaka river-port terminal Sadarghat to Basila. He along with Shipping Ministry and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) officials visited the areas to monitor the eviction drives that were carried out on the banks of Buriganga and Turag over the last 12 working days from January 29 to February 20 under the ongoing walkway project.
The shipping secretary also gave directives to the all the authorities concerned to demolish all the structures built on river shores on river Burigang and Turag including the completely occupied main channel of river Turag by one Amin Momin Housing Company in Basila area. He also asked BIWTA to strengthen monitoring system as the evicted areas could not be occupied again.
