US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal arrived in Dhaka on Thursday evening on a three-day visit after attending the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Biswal represented the United States as an observer state at the two-day SAARC Summit held in the Nepalese capital from November 26 to 27.
Earlier, a media note issued from Washington on last Friday said that Biswal will travel to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and Switzerland from November 23 to December 5.
As part of the scheduled programme, Biswal arrived in Dhaka on Thursday night after attending the SAARC Summit in Kathmandu.
During her trip, she will hold meetings with high government officials and opposition party leaders. She will also have meetings with labour, EMG sector, civil society and member of the business community, said a US Embassy press release.
In addition, the US Assistant Secretary will also travel to Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) in Gazipur, added the release.
Biswal will also meet BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence at 6:00pm today (Friday), sources at the BNP chairperson’s press wing said.
This will be Biswal’s second visit to Bangladesh after assuming the office. Earlier, she visited Dhaka in November last year. It is believed that Biswal will take stock of the post-poll situation in Bangladesh.
