AGGRIEVED family members of Biswajit Das are still waiting hopelessly after two years of the horrific killing as 13 of the 21 convicted killers are roaming freely in the capital. The free movement of the killers in front of police defying court orders simultaneously shows the audacity of the criminals in disobeying the court and the inability of the police to capture the criminals. The hacking of Biswajit to death in broad daylight and in the presence of newsmen drew huge reactions, which bound the government to bring the unruly killers affiliated to the ruling party under legal procedure. The criminalisation of the ruling party’s arm Chhatra League has already terrorised the nation by their acts and involvement with every sort of crimes, which must be checked to sustain the virtues of Liberation War — democracy, rules of law and justice.A daily report said that of the fugitives, two were sentenced to death and 11 given life terms for hacking Biswajit to death in the city’s old part. The family members were satisfied with the verdict of a Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 on December 18 last year but the execution of the verdict is a far cry. The court handed down death sentence to eight BCL activists of Jagannath University and life term to 13 others. Those behind bars have appealed to the High Court against the verdict and their plea is now awaiting hearing. If they secure bail, it is feared that they may intimidate the family members of the slain to withdraw the case. The unruly BCL terrorists of Jagannath University unit attacked Biswajit, a tailor in profession and a member of the religious minority, with sharp weapons which resulted in his death in Old Dhaka during an opposition-imposed blockade on December 9, 2012. The horrific brutality was widely covered by the media and the image of a bleeding Biswajit would continue to haunt people. However, a number of BCL activists said that some of the convicts have been keeping in touch with the BCL leaders at the university, though the leaders declined the allegation. Establishing human rights as per the Constitution is not the agenda of the ruling power as an apathy exists to execute the verdict .The Court has completed its job by sending arrest warrants, but the police remain loyal to ruling party and are unwilling to find out the brutal human-slaughters, putting the last nail into the coffin of Human Rights in the country. The killing of Bishwajit showed the political criminalisation and attitude of the ruling party towards humanity. Therefore, even after two years, the killers are seen active in the ‘BCL cadre group’ that bars police from finding out the murderers. The long-cherished virtue “Rules of Law” has not been established in the country and though secularism is theoretically a part of the Constitution, it failed to protect the life of Bishwajit, who belonged to a minority.
