Bishwa Sahitya Kendra (BSK) awarded 1,316 school students under its book reading programme in Barisal city through a prize giving ceremony on Saturday.
The ceremony held at Baptist Mission Girls School of the city.
Ram Chandra Das, as chief guest inaugurating the prize giving ceremony of the programme said education through reading books should be given first priority instead of getting better grade in examination for building a progressive nation.
He appreciated the book-reading programme of BSK as a unique programme in the world.
Intelligence, courage, patriotism derived from education like the source of light hidden in fire. Books play role as source of fire for building energy to develop the nation by enlightening the human being, he added.
Among others Khairul Alam Sabuj, Al Mansur, eminent actors, Professor Md. Ali Noki, vice chancellor Stamford University, Prof. Md. Yunus, chairman Barishal Education Board, Prof.Moazzem Hossain, divisional director of secondary and higher secondary education, Anwar Hossain, district education officer, S M Firoj Al Mamun, GrameenPhone area manager, Sharif Md. Masud, director BSK, Marry Surjani Samaddar, headmaster of the school,, addressed the programme.
They called the youths to read books more and more to make themselves as enlightened persons.
In four categories 2,165 students of 33 educational institutions of the city were awarded prizes under this book-reading programme of 2019.
Among them 30 students were awarded as best readers and two guardians as best guardians on Saturday.
The progamme was organised by non-profit institution BSK to promote reading habits among students.
The programme was sponsored by Grameenphone since last 16 years.
