Speakers at a virtual conference focused on solid waste management through community based bio gas generation for building smart and healthy cities.
Global Development Charity Practical Action organized the virtual the 20th National Renewable Energy Conference and Green Expo 2020 titled “Biogas Based Power Generation for Smart and Healthy City” with Md Helal Uddin, Additional Secretary, Power and Energy Ministry, in the chair.
Md Helal Uddin focused on the fact that the reduction of waste generation and greenhouse gas emission is the way leading to achieve greener, smart and healthy cities.
“We have to come out of the concept of biogas that includes some animals, a plant and a digester which will eventually stop working after serving several months. We must upscale biogas and biogas-based power generation to a commercial level, so that biogas can take care to reduce the carbon dioxide emission,” he said.
M A Matin, ex-Director Deneral, Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra presented a keynote speech focusing on the solid waste management through community based bio gas model with which RDA produces gas, fertilizer and waste-2-value simultaneously.
The bio gas model has succeeded to supply power for 24 hours having 140 KB to 75 households of 112 villages.
He also showed an example package sewage treatment system, which was replicated at Swapna Nagar and Uttara.
Matin emphasized on implementation of the concept 3R (reduce, recycle and reuse) to resolve difficulties related to gigantic production of waste in cities.
Country Director of Practical Action Shawkat A Begum put focus on the environment friendliness of biogas, which can be used to lessen the urban environmental degradation.
She mentioned that some of the remarkable projects of Practical Action are working on reviving biogas schemes and producing waste-2-resource in the country.
Engineer Uttam Kumar Saha discussed reasons and aftermaths of rapid urbanization and working scopes of municipalities, adding, “Biogas generation from disposed waste by using different technology and engaging different stakeholders can be a sustainable model towards achieving a smart and healthy city.”
Dr Ahmedul Hye Chowdhury, Senior Vice President and Environmental Specialist, IDCOL, said that developing strategy for municipal solid waste management in Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and opportunities are embedded with the development of biogas programs in the country. Dr Samir Kumar Sarkar, Director, Training Division, RDA Bogra, discussed on pyrolysis and gasification technology to produce biogas in a more efficient way at RDA Bogra which can be replicated in some other areas.
