Bio-security can fight spread of infectious diseases

The concepts of bio-safety, bio-security, and bio-risk management are new in Bangladesh, but they have enormous importance in the present-day world in fighting the spread of infectious diseases and giving safety to laboratory workers, experts said at a conference on Wednesday.
Biological agents including bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins cause infection, allergy, toxicity or other hazards to human health and also pose threats to economic development, social stability and even national security, they added.
They made further said that the natural outbreaks of diseases could pose challenges to global safety and security by undermining national economies, international trade and travel, public health and safety, trust of populace in its own government, leading to fragile state collapse. Bio-safety programmes are crucial to control such outbreaks and an overall crisis situation.

Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University organized by the Bangladesh Bio-safety and Bio-security Association.
DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique presided over the inaugural function while Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Anisul Huq, Executive Director of ICDDRB Professor John David Clemens, Executive Director of International Federation of Bio-safety Association MS Maureen Ellis and Chairman of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of DU Professor Sharif Akhteruzzaman also addressed, among others.
