Biman Bangladesh Airlines will launch its Dhaka-Toronto flights in April, however, the state-owned company aimed to launch the flights in March. The activities have been hampered due to the long standoff by Covid-19, said the State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a function organized at Biman Press at Farmgate in the capital on Monday to inaugurate the commercial services of Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Printing and Publishing Division (Biman Press).

He said the flight will be launched directly from Dhaka to Toronto, Canada in April. Besides, as Japan lifted its long-standing ban on flights, there has been positive progress in launching Biman Bangladesh Airlines flights on the “Dhaka-Tokyo route after nearly 14 years.”

The Biman is going to launch flights to Chennai as a new route. However, the State Minister did not say exactly when the flights to Tokyo and Chennai would be launched, but indicated that “flights would be resumed on these two routes as soon as the Covid-19 crisis was resolved.”

The State Minister also said Biman Bangladesh will soon give good news about the Dhaka-New York direct flight. “Biman’s fleet is now ultramodern. With the keen interest and efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 13 new ultramodern aircraft have been added to the fleet of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Two more new Dash-8 aircraft will be added to the fleet soon,” he said.

He added that the highest quality service is being provided to the passengers on international and domestic routes through these aircraft. “The negligence of any official of the Biman will not be tolerated to ensure the highest quality passenger service.”

The State Minister said the aviation and tourism industries have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide. All the airlines in the world are currently going through a special situation. “Biman is no exception. We are taking steps to reduce the operational costs of the aircraft as well as increase the revenue of the aircraft through various initiatives,” said Md Mahbub Ali.
