After two foreign nationals, now Biman Bangladesh Airlines is likely to get a local person as its next managing director and chief executive officer.
“I think there’s no foreign suitable candidate now… whoever will be the MD will come from locals,” Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon told The New Nation on Saturday.
He said the appointment process has started and a sub-committee is working on it. “We hope the committee will finalise their candidates within two weeks after interview with the aspirants,” he said.
According to the Biman sources, about 40 Bangladeshi and foreign nationals applied for the post and a short list has been prepared.
The Civil Aviation Minister said there is no special preference for the foreigners as the Biman MD. “We can go for foreigner if we find suitable one. Or else, we’ll go for local one.”
A senior Biman official told The New Nation that there is a possibility of appointing a former Biman official as MD. He said the former official served Biman as acting MD several times during his service period. But he declined to mention any name.
Kevin John Steele was the first foreign national that appointed as the managing director of the national flag carrier. He was appointed the CEC and MD of Biman in March 2013 for a two-year term. But he resigned from his post on May 23, 2014 showing health ground.
Later, Kyle Haywood of South African budget carrier Fastjet, Kyle Haywood, took over the charge on January last year. But he quit on January this year citing health grounds.
Since then, MM Asaduzzaman is discharging the responsibilities of the state-run carrier. He is the director of Engineering & Material Management of the airliners.
