UNB, Dhaka :
The Parliament on Tuesday passed the ‘President’s Pension, Gratuity, and other Privileges Bill, 2016’, with the provision that presidents whose tenures are declared illegal or unconstitutional by the higher court would be
declared ineligible to receive the benefits. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury who is in charge of Cabinet Division in the Parliament moved
the Bill. The Bill was passed by voice vote. The law states if any court declares the assumption of office by any president as illegal and unconstitutional, then he or she will not be eligible for receiving the pension. The nominees or the descendants of the Presidents could claim the pension, the Bill added.
By this law Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad, who incidentally have had their assumption of the presidency declared illegal in separate HC rulings, will not receive pension as former presidents.
Jatiya Party MPs demanded to keep their chairman HM Ershad out of the purview of this Bill. But it was rejected by the Minister.
