As they’ve been doing for 30 years now, Forbes rolls out their annual list of the richest people on the planet. This year only 1,810 people made the cut, down from a record 1,826 a year ago.
Their aggregate net worth is valued at $6.48 trillion, which is $570 billion less than last year. It was also the first time since 2010 that the average net worth of a billionaire dropped – it is now $3.6 billion, $300 million less than last year.
A major reshuffling took place in the top 20, with only two billionaires managing to hold on to their ranks. Bill Gates is once again the richest person on Earth with a net worth of $75 billion. Amancia Ortega, of Zara fame, comes in at number two with a fortune worth $67 billion. Warren Buffett rounds out the top three with $60.8 billion. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, had the best year of all billionaires as he added $11.2 billion to his fortune and moved up to the sixth position from number 16 last year. For all his talk of wealth, the left-field GOP frontrunner Donald Trump is tied for position #324 with a net worth of $4.5 billion.
In total, the U.S. has 540 billionaires, placing it far above any other country on Earth. It’s followed by mainland China with 251 (Hong Kong has another 69) and Germany with 120. Russia has 77, 11 fewer than last year, while Brazil lost 23 and is now down to 31.
