Coronavirus Pandemic: Biggest jump in cases

The deadly coronavirus has now spread to 34 districts in the country as of April 12, and of the infected areas, 12 districts are under Dhaka division.
In the biggest daily jump since the outbreak, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) reported 139 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, more than twice of the previous, taking the tally to 621 in the country.
Four more coronavirus patients died in Bangladesh in last 24 hours in Bangladesh, said (IEDCR) on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the new deaths raised the death toll to 34, said Professor Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) in a press briefing in Dhaka.
She said, a total of 1,340 samples were tested across the country during the period.
“Among the four deceased, two were aged between 30 to 40, one above 60 and another above70. Around 50 percent of total patients detected are from Dhaka,” Meerjadi Sabrina said.
She said that three more Covid-19 patients recovered in the last 24 hours making the number of total recoveries to 39.
“Two female and one male patients recovered in the last 24 hours. One of them is a physician who got infected while treating a patient,” Dr. Sabrina said.
Three out of the four people who lost their lives were males and one was female.
Among the four deceased, two were between 30 to 40, one above 60 and another above 70.
 Dr. Sabrina said that most of the patients were between 31 to 40 years.  
“Of the 139 people infected, 96 were males, 43 were females. Besides, 25 percent of them are aged between 31 to 40 years. All others are 21 to 30 years old. Sixty-two people are from different areas of Dhaka city,” she said.
Dhaka recorded the highest number of infected in the country so far, which is 50 percent while Narayanganj has second highest number of cases, she added.
 “Around 50 of the newly infected patients are from Dhaka. Thirty-five percent of patients are from districts within Dhaka division. Six percent of the total patients are from Chattogram,” the IEDCR Director said.
IEDCR spotted the presence of COVID-19 in four new districts — Laxmipur, Lalmonirhat, Jhalakathi and Thakurgaon.  
Besides, Dr Sanya Tahmina, Additional Director General (Planning and Development) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said, a total of 20,525 people have been in quarantines.
“Coronavirus tests are done in 40 hospitals and institutions across the country,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dhaka witnessed the most confirmed cases followed by Narayanganj, a district that has already been identified as the epicentre in Bangladesh as a number of confirmed cases, found in other districts, had recent travel history of Narayanganj.
Coronavirus has also spread to Gazipur, Madaripur, Munshiganj, Chittagong, Kishoreganj, Cumilla, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Rajbari, Chandpur, Brahmanbaria, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Narsingdi, Nilphamari, Gopalganj, Barguna, Takurgaon, Jhalokati, Rangpur, Sherpur, Tangail, Chuadanga, Cox’s Bazar, Moulvibazar, Shariatpur, Sylhet, Patuakhali, Habiganj, Netrokona, Laxmipur, Lalmonirhat.
Districts that have the most coronavirus cases are Dhaka 335, Narayanganj 107, Gazipur 23, Madaripur 16, Munsiganj 14, Chittagong 12 and Kishoreganj 10.
With the number of coronavirus cases showing a steady rise, several districts have gone into complete lockdown.
The government announced a countrywide shutdown since March 26 to contain Covid-19 transmission.
On March 8, Bangladesh first confirmed three cases of Covid-19, a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus.
