Customs officials, in the biggest ever gold haul in recent times, seized 905 gold bars, weighing 105 Kg from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong yesterday and detained ten people in this connection.
Of the detainees, seven were Biman passengers while the rest three were caught red handed from the airport premises on their suspicious movement.
They were identified as Shafique Islam, Mansur Islam, Nahid Talukder, Mahinuddin, Peyarul Islam, Imtiaz Khan, Md Yakub, Rahim Shikder, Md Faisal and Hasan Mahmud.
Moshiur Rahman Mandal, Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Airport Customs Authority, said that on receipt of information, the officials searched the BG026 flight of Bangladesh Biman from Dubai at around 10:30am and recovered the gold worth of Tk 45.50 crore.
The gold was recovered from seven bags kept beneath the seats of seven passengers, he said.
In primary interrogation, the assistant commissioner said, seven of the detainees have confessed their involvement with the smuggling.
Parvez Al-Zaman, also Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Airport Customs Authority, said that it was the biggest ever-gold haul in recent times in the Chittagong Airport.
A case was filed with Potenga Police Station in this connection.
