Customs Intelligence officials recovered 936 gold bars worth about Tk 47 crore from toilets of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight and arrested a person at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday noon.
The arrested man has been identified as Anisur Rahman, an engineer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence said at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in a press conference, on basis of an Information, Customs officials interrogated the engineer and recovered the smuggled gold.
The gold bars weighing 106 kilogrammes were recovered around 2:30pm from toilets of a flight of Biman Bangladesh.
The gold Bars were found in 14 packets, wrapped with blue and black clothes. The gold bars in packets were kept in seven toilets among the 14 toilets of the airlines. The aircraft from Dubai landed at 8:00am, the official said.
In a quarry Rahman said, the gold smugglers are very smart and efficient in technology.
However, The mystery of leaving behind such a huge quantity of gold was not clear. The official’s suspect that those who brought it on the flight could well be planning to take it out with the help of a airport staff having access to the aircrafts.
Recently some cleaners have been arrested by Customs when they were found with gold.
It was, however, a mystery how such a huge quantity of gold could get past the airport security scans at Dubai.
Meanwhile, the random gold hauls creating a big concern in the country.
Sources said, everyday huge amount of gold bars come from abroad, especially from the Middle East. The customs officials could recover only a small quantity of gold bars and its peddlers. But a large quantity of gold bar transited from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong as it is considered a safe corridor for gold smuggling.
