Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation called for inclusion of Bidi making in cottage industries category and six-point demand that includes the imposition of Tk 18 as tax on every thousand Bidies following India. They organized a human chain in front of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) at 9am on Sunday. At the end of the progam, the leaders of the federation submitted a memorandum to the NBR chairman, says a press release on Sunday.
Joint Secretary of the federation Harik Hossain presided over the program while President MK Bangali, Executive President Amin Uddin BSC and General Secretary Abdur Rahman addressed the human chain. More than 200 workers from different parts of the country joined protest.
Federation’s President MK Bangali said, “If there is smoking in the country, Bidi will remain. The conspiracy to terminate only the Bidi industry will not be tolerated in any way. If there is any plan to increase the taxes on the Bidi in the budget for the fiscal year 2019-20, we will form a rigid movement with 20 lakh Bidi workers.”
