Bidi industrial is one of the oldest industries in the country, for thousands of years this has come. Two million people working in this industry. So the time has come to give bidi the status of cottage industry. The Research and Development Collective (RDC) President and Professor of History of Dhaka University, Mejba Kamal Speaking as the chief guest at a press conference in the National Press Club on Sunday, said this.
Professor Mejba Kamal said, “We also want to smoke-free society. But as long as there is smoke, there will be bidi. Between 2040, the government announced the goal of free smoking from Bangladesh. For this reason, short, medium and long term plans should be adopted. The employment of two million workers in the bidi industry is going on. Where will the workers go, when the industry is closed without alternative employment?
He further said that in the last budget, the finance ministry and the National Board of Revenue imposed extra tariff on the bidi industry. Later, the intervention of the Prime Minister was slightly reduced. Even then the tariffs are much more.
