Bidi industry owners want coop of Finance Minister

Bangladesh Bidi Industrial Owners Association (BBIOA) demanded the declaration the bidi as a cottage industry by reducing the duty of 18 times per thousand bidi, says a press release
In the meeting with the Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith in the Secretariat on Sunday, the president of the committee, Bijoy Krishna De raised the demand. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and coordinator of Bangladesh Bidi Industrial Owners Association Ali Sadat Khan were also present.
In the meeting, Chairman of Bangladesh Bidi Industrial Owners Association and Chairman of Barisal Karikori Bidi Bijoy Krishna Dee, Joint general secretary of the Association and Rangpur Haragachhar Maya Bidi factory chairman Anwarul Islam Maya, member of the Association and director of Kismat Bidi, Sirajganj Uday Shankar Saha, General Manager of Akij Bidi and Owner Representative Kazi Anwarul Islam, Bidi Industrial Owners Association Vice President and Managing Director of Bogra Sharif Bidi Factory Rana Hossain, member of Bidi Industrial Owners Association and Chairman of Samad Bidi Factory of Sirajganj Alhaj Yusuf Ali Akand, Managing Director of Gafur Bidi Factory Nader Hossain, owners-representatives of Pabna Bidi factory were present on the discussion with Finance Minister & Commerce Minister.
The Finance Minister has assured to consider these demands, said Bidi Industrial Association’s leaders. Earlier on March 31, the finance minister wrote a letter to the prime minister, including other ministries to stop the production of tobacco products. In the letter, he propose to close the bidi industry in two years and cigarette industry within 22 years. The proposal of the finance minister was rejected by the bidi workers, tobacco cultivators, bidi traders and bidi consumers.
