Officers-in-charge (OCs) of all police stations under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have been asked to prepare a list of delinquent cops in the wake of rising criminal activities by a section of policemen.
The police Headquarters came up with the move following instructions from the government high-ups.
Once the list is prepared, the errant cops will come under intense intelligence vigilance, officials said.
“Criminal activities, including torture on innocent people, by police very often make media headlines leading to an embarrassing situation for the police department,” a senior official of the Police Headquarters told The New Nation on Friday, asking not to be named.
He said, the incidents have severely tarnished the image of the department, we have asked OCs of all police stations under the jurisdiction of DMP to prepare a list of errant cops.
The official further said that once the list is prepared, the secret servicemen will spy on the errant cops to bring them to justice.
Terming the recent incidents “unfortunate,” he said, police brutalities perpetrated on the innocent citizens are unacceptable and the errant cops will not be spared if they found guilty.
“As police is a disciplined force, crime incident by a section of police cannot weaken its’ discipline,” he claimed.
When asked, he said, the motive behind preparing such list is to maintain discipline in the force. The errant cops will be cautioned against committing any act possibly damage their image. Besides, the concerned authorities have also prepared a list of crime-prone police stations.
A total of 14 police stations have been identified as crime-prone. They are Mirpur, Shah Ali, Jatrabari, Uttara East and West, Mohammadpur, Kotwali, Lalbagh, Dhanmondi, Khilgaon, Adabor, Pallabi, Dakkhin Khan and Kadomtoli.
The DMP has 49 police stations under its jurisdiction.
Six OCs of the crime-prone police station have already been transferred to bring administrative overhaul in the police stations.
