UNB, Dhaka :
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday told Parliament that the government has initiated a move to fix the number of cars for families.
“A proposal has been made in the draft Road Transport Bill to fix the ceiling of number of personal cars for each family,” the minister said replying to an un-starred question from ruling Awami League MP Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11). The minister said a process is on to finalise a time-befitting draft ‘Road Transport Bill, 2016’ in place of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1983.
In the capital, there are only 21,771 public transports against some 7.30 lakh non-commercially run small vehicles, including 4.03 lakh motorcycles. The number of non-commercially run small motor vehicles registered with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is 7,29,959 in the capital as of May 31, 2016, Obaidul said. On the other hand, the number of public transports-bus, minibus, human hauler, auto-rickshaw and taxicab-that have route permit is only 21,771, he said. In reply to another un-starred question from the same MP, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister said cars with stickers inscribing ‘On Test or AFR (Applied for Registration)’ are hardly seen in Dhaka city these days.
Obaidul, however, said motorcycles with such stickers used to be seen in various areas of the country in the past.
