Core committee meet today: Bid to ensure foreigners’ security

Staff Reporter :The maiden meeting of the core committee, which was earlier formed to ensure security of the foreign nationals and officials of the diplomatic missions, will be held today (Thursday) at the State guest house Padma, official sources said.Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Prime Minister’s Security Adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddiqui and Chiefs of the security agencies will attend the meeting with Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali in the chair.The meeting will discuss the overall security situation of the country after the Dhaka terror attack.It will also discuss the proposals, requests and recommendations made by foreign diplomatic missions in Dhaka to ensure security of the foreigners. The activities of the committee will remain under the supervision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, the foreign mission including the US, Japan and Italy have urged the Bangladesh Government to give permission to carry firearms by their security personnel.Japanese officials said Monday that the government is mulling ramping up bulletproof vehicles and other equipment to protect the country’s aid workers overseas in the wake of a terrorist attack in Bangladesh that killed seven Japanese.On July 1, at least five Bangladeshi men stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery, a cafe popular with foreigners, businessmen and diplomats, and killed 20 customers, including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian and a US citizen.
