A police constable, who went missing after jumping into the Kaliganga River for arresting a convict at Joynagar village in Manikganj Sadar upazila, was found dead on Friday.
Divers from Dhaka Fire Service and Civil Defence conducted a rescue operation around 9:30 am and recovered the body at 1:15 pm.
The deceased Shahinur Rahman was posted at Manikganj Sadar Police Station.
He hailed from Gazipur district, said Rifat Rahman Shamim, Superintendent of Police in Manikganj.
Rakibuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station, said a team of police led by Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam conducted a drive in Joynagar area to arrest Salam, a convicted accused in a drug case around 5:00 pm.
Being chased, Salam jumped into the river in a bid to escape the arrest.
Seeing it, Shahinur also jumped into the river, but went missing. Though Salam managed to go into hiding, the constable met a tragic death, the OC said.
