A complaint was found that a housewife named Madhabi Basak (22) was killed by torture in Bhangura upazila of Pabna. It was reported that Madhabi was five months pregnant. The incident took place in Kalibari Haldarparamahalla of Bhangura municipality. Police arrested Madhabi’s husband Subrata Haldar (26) on charges of murdering her on Wednesday.
According to the locals, Madhabi was often tortured by her husband. He was severely beaten on Tuesday afternoon for trivial reasons. Even after the ward councilor came and settled the matter, Madhabi was beaten up by her husband. Madhabi was reported to have committed suicide on Tuesday evening.
Neighbors Asma Khatun and old Sharifa Khatun said Madhabi had been tortured by her parent’s in-laws families for several days.
On Tuesday evening, after hearing the shouting, we went to their house and saw Madhabi’s body hanging to crossbeam with a scarf wrapped her throat.
Ward councilor Shahidul Islam said, “After hearing the news of Madhabi being tortured, I went to their house in the afternoon and settled the matter.” I heard in the evening that she had committed suicide.
Madhabi’s father Parimal Basak said, “My daughter’s parent’s in-laws tortured her a lot for dowry. They killed Madhabi because we couldn’t pay in cash,” he added.
M. Faisal Bin Ahsan, Officer in charge of Bhangurathana confirmed the incident and said that the housewife’s father was filed a complaint under Section 306 against the five persons on Wednesday afternoon. Police have arrested Madhabi’s husband.
