Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday requested the government to take necessary measures to enable the Chittagong port to offer quick services.
To this end, the trade body of the apparel sector also made few recommendations to minimize the existing problems that cause extra time consumption during loading and unloading of containers.
BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman made the recommendations at a press conference at BGMEA headquarters on the complexities of loading-unloading of containers in Chittagong port and over all scenario of country’s apparel sector.
He said the port needs 26 key gantry cranes but it has only four of which two are now out of order. He requested the authority to make the two cranes operational immediately.
The BGMEA leader also said the port has 87 pieces of equipment against the necessity of 299 for container handling and 285 for cargo handling against the requirement of 895.
“The government should procure the equipment immediately for handling container or rent those from private sector to tackle the crisis,” suggested the BGMEA President.
He also urged the government to start the construction work of Patengya Terminal as soon as possible for increasing efficiency of the port.
Siddiqur urged the authority to take initiative of delivering FCL containers with RMG raw materials in a day with customs office clearance.
