BGMEA wants quick goods release to overcome downturn

Leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have urged the Chattagram Port Authority (CPA) and Chattagram Customs House to take initiatives to quick release of export-import garment goods.
They made the call in a meeting with the newly appointed Chairman of the CPA Rear Admiral Mohammed M Shahjahan in a courtesy meeting in the port city on Thursday. Chattagram Customs House Commissioner M fakhrul Alam was also present.
Besides, BGMEA First Vice-President Mohammad Abdus Salam, Senior Vice-President Faisal Samad, Vice-President (Finance) Abdur Rahim Firoz and Director Khandaker Belayet Hossain, among others, were present.
BGMEA president Dr Rubana Haq said, “The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic has led to a catastrophe in the country’s garment industry. Its widespread negative impact on the national economy is already visible. Efforts are being made to revive the RMG industry with the cooperation of all including the government.”
Overcoming the ongoing recession, she requested the Customs and Chittagong Port Authority to ensure speedy unloading of garment products to facilitate the exporter and the buyers.
M Shahjahan said, “The garment industry is playing a very important role in the country’s economy. The port authority is carrying out import-export related activities smoothly despite various constraints to continue the growth of exports.”
He also emphasized on use of Pangaon port to reduce import cost and reduce traffic congestion on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
