BGMEA seeks WTO support for sustainable RMG sector

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought Tk 55 million ($650,000) from the World Trade Organisation for making the Bangladeshis apparel sector more sustainable, reports just-style.
The fund will be invested in research and development, innovation, product diversification and value addition, according to the online media outlet, which specialises in the global apparel and textile industry.
Quoting a BGMEA spokesperson, it reported that the top apparel trade body’s President Rubana Huq made the plea to Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi recently for the amount to be derived from the fund provided by the WTO to locations with a least developed country status.
Munshi said the department of commerce is weighing up the demand which will see Tk 20 million assigned to R&D for the future sustainability of the RMG sector, Tk 7.5 million for establishment of a productivity centre, Tk 7.5 million for development of harmonised and unified planning tools for the sector and Tk 20 million for product innovation and moving up to the value-added segment.
