Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has proposed establishing around 1,000 retail stores in various Indian cities to display and sell their products.
The BGMEA also wants to invest approximately US$ 25 million in India for setting up a warehouse and distribution centre in India, and sought allotment of a land for it in the neighbouring country in this regard.
The BGMEA leaders, led by its President M Atiqul Islam, made the proposal to Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran at a meeting with him at the High Commission on Sunday.
They garment manufacturers expect to export approximately US$ 1 billion worth of Bangladeshi RMGs within the next few years through their retail stores in India.
In their proposal, the BGMEA President said the land will be procured in the name of a company formed by BGMEA, BKMEA and others to set up a warehouse and distribution center primarily for RMGs.
Earlier at a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dhaka, they discussed the prospect of boosting Bangladesh’s RMG export to India in an effort to reduce the existing trade gap between the two countries. They urged Modi to allot a piece of land in India for them and he assured them of considering it favorably. Earlier, India sought a proposal from the BGMEA over its investment plan in the neighbouring country for opening a warehouse for RMG products.
