Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice-president of BGMEA, an association of ready-made garment owners, has demanded unloading of consignments of imported goods from the Chittagong port in the lockdown period aimed at proper shipment of readymade RMG products within the specific period.
In a letter sent to the Chittagong Port Chairman, he said the ongoing limited range of lockdowns to prevent the transmission of corona virus is turning into a severe lockdown from July 1. However, as per the previous announcement, the import and export activities related to the port including the garment industry will be kept out of the lockdown.
We have come to know that the port authorities are taking initiative to unload all the imported goods from the private ICD (offdock) in the interest of keeping the operational activities of the port normal in the present situation.
At present, there are allegations that there is a lot of delay in unloading of goods due to shortage of space, equipment and manpower in private ICDs.
Syed Nazrul Islam further mentioned in the letter that the crisis situation in the global corona has brought down the country’s readymade garment industry. The factory is closing. Buyers are canceling or suspending orders.
According to the information received, more than 3.75 billion export orders have been canceled or suspended so far. In this context, the owners of the garment industry are deeply concerned about the future of the industry and the management of other activities, including the payment of wages to the workers.
